Dustplates concept where, after deciding to murder the Underground, Sans gives up his name. For reasons he doesn’t quite understand, he’s always loved his name, loved the idea of even having a name, so this is a form of self-punishment for him. He’s chosen to destroy everyone and everything he loves; he doesn’t exactly deserve to be referred to as a person anymore, does he? For a while, he tries to become entirely nameless, but it doesn’t quite work. He’ll think of something and his mind will slip. He’ll refer to himself, or Phantom will call him Sans. His mind won’t let him be completely nameless. So he settles for the next best thing.

A few years later, Nightmare visits Dusttale and recruits 1-S, a silent assassin with an unsettling grin. As names go it’s unusual, especially in a group with people named Killer, Horror and Cross, but the others generally accept it. After all, what’s in a name? He’s a skilled strategist and fighter with a past every bit as horrific as their own. Except.

Except every time they call him 1-S, he flinches. When you call someone’s name they should turn towards the sound; he recoils instead, vanishing into the shadows of his hood. In battle, everyone quickly learns not to use that name because when he hears it, he seems for a moment to forget how to fight, before pressing forward with the type of fear and anger that disintegrates strategy into chaos. As much as Nightmare feeds on the needles of negative energy summoned whenever 1-S hears his name, he is frustrated by this barrier that begins to form, the way that saying his newest recruit’s name abruptly halts communication, tearing at any sense of camaraderie. This can’t go on.

The first time Killer calls him Dusty, it’s an insult and a barbed joke. Looking for trouble, Killer makes a comment about 1-S’ scarf still being covered in his brother’s dust. 1-S launches himself at the other skeleton and the two have to be separated before they seriously harm each other. But even as Horror pulls 1-S off him, Killer sees the furious gleam in his eyes. So much better than the dull fear that rests there when he’s referred to as 1-S. So much more exciting.

Killer continues to call him Dusty. For the longest time, 1-S responds to this name with nothing but rage, but he doesn’t flinch. In day to day life, he looks up and glares at the speaker. In battle, it makes him grit his teeth at the most. So as time goes on, the others slowly begin to call him that as well. Not Dusty, no - that’s too infantile, too disrespectful. But Dust… that name works.

That name suits him well.

Horror would be sitting quietly on a table with murder and killer, all of them doing nothing important.

Then he'll start complaining about how bored he is.

Then it'll escalate into shouting. He'll Slam the table multiple times while shouting how bored he is.

Gets up.

Trashes the place and breaks a few things.

Throws a tantrum.

Then goes back to his seat.

Slams his head on the table.

And falls asleep.

And throughout all of this, murder and killer Haven't moved an inch, still occupied with whatever the fuck they were doing and not paying any attention to what just happened.

but headcanons make up for everything and theres a lot of things to work with with the information provided and as someone who rewrites characters/character lore as a hobby (staring at blueprint and blueberry) its been very fun working on dust with what we know!!

MINI ANALYSIS TIME

Because while I love the soft interpretations, even WITH those let’s be real; that’s not how they’d act off the bat

Horror would be extremely judgmental (fair) and hate Dust for what he did. He’d despise him and probably be very passive aggressive. Making jabs and making his disdain apparent when they have to interact. I think getting a read on Dust is also difficult and would piss Horror off. Horror is unpredictable and has a sadistic streak, if he was mad or manic and had Dust in a corner he’d have no qualms about manhandling the guy. (And Dust probably wouldn’t do much to stop him.)

Meanwhile, Dusttale’s creator was asked once how Dust may feel if he met Horror, to which they said he feels bad for Horror. He likes him, sees him as someone who went through something horribly undeserved. In my mind Dust is somewhat protective of Horror.

I interpret these clashing of dynamics as Horror’s just utter disdain for this guy, and Dust’s resigned acceptance of Horror’s judgment. He’d agree with him if he were to judge himself, but I think a part of him wants Horror’s approval. He doesn’t EVER expect to get it, but Horror is….

While he’s seen hell, he’s almost a less tormented version of Dust himself. Deep down they are the same. Horror has suffered greatly, but even still hasn’t hit the deep end dust has, and I think he’d want to protect that sort of innocence he’s granted. One could think of it as him protecting a piece of himself he himself has already sacrificed. And wanting APPROVAL from him, wishing to be forgiven, craving that small piece of validation or understanding as he tries to reconcile with himself.

Horror’s formed opinion makes sense, he agrees with it, and simply wishes he disagreed, that he could have proof of himself being a FRACTION worthy of forgiveness or understanding.

The judge in both of them has both formed an opinion of the other, and they happen to differ greatly. Horror sees Dust as an abuser and Dust sees Horror as a victim.

I like to imagine that, while reluctantly thrown into the same general vicinity, Horror would grow to be more understanding (again if we are going with a PROGRESSIVE plot line) and come to understand that, yes, he wasn’t WRONG, but there is nuance to the situation. They both have a very grim understanding of what it’s like to be trapped. I think he has the capacity to understand Dust better if he was given time. His hands aren’t clean after all, and he knows what it’s like to be forced into a situation and to feel backed into a drastic decision. He knows what it’s like to lose your autonomy and to feel your mind break itself under pressure.

I think the simple fact that Dust wouldn’t TRY to change his mind or justify himself would be part of why Horror could come to understand him. He’s devestated by his actions, he is by no means a sadist.

Horror coming to understand Dust and sort of reconcile/forgive him I think would be rather BIG for Horror, especially if you factor in other situations he now has to consider. (For example, his Undyne and her drastic attempt at freeing the undergroud…) reconciling his OWN arguably cruel decisions he has made with pure intentions, when he feels there’s no other choice (like his Papyrus and tricking him into doing something so outside of his beliefs, to protect him)

It would also be healing for Dust to get that reconciliation with Horror because again…Horror’s opinion actually may MATTER.

And in the same way that Dust may see Horror as a sort of person to be protected from further harm, Horror would probably pick up on all of the VERY bad habits Dust has that (in my observation at least) are EXTREMELY similar to his own habits/past habits (isolation, obsession, deprivation, paranoia, bringing harm to self etc) and I could see him being sensitive towards those and trying to prevent it worsening (it’s a sore subject💔) Horror is shown to prioritize taking care of those he cares about, even when he’s a bit mad, and he has the capacity to grow an understanding for someone he doesn’t like initially :))

I think they have potential to be VERY good for one another, Horror (while being fucked up) encourages (and maybe forces) better habits and actually has an opinion that matters to Dust, and Dust is inclined to be VERY loyal (Horror needs someone to show him loyalty.) to anyone who cares to give him the time of day, as it’s far beyond what he’d expect, and he’s got the sympathy/protective streak towards Horror as an actual in character detail.

And from there it would be wonderful to explore their dynamic in whatever way you like to interpret it🤫💥

For The Forgotten Ones is completed, I haven’t read the final chapter yet because I wanted to finish this first

Buddy thank you so much for this wonderful story, I know I keep saying it but it genuinely changed my life. I hadn’t been in the Undertale fandom since about 2017, it was my first fandom experience so it was very special to me, but I left it far behind. at the start of this year I stumbled upon Calcium-cat’s comic based on the first chapter, and I found my way to this fic and read I think seven chapters in one night LOL. I had to stop because it was so late, but afterwards I sat in the dark of my room and just, felt. this fic felt like the peak of the old Undertale fandom, it was almost overwhelming (in the best way). all these emotions and this energy that I hadn’t felt in years all came rushing back it was like magic. like rediscovering the meaning of life. I know that sounds ridiculous and cheesy but Undertale genuinely made me who I am, it was my first fandom, drew my first fanart and wrote my first fan fiction and went to my first con and made friends and discovered this whole community that made me feel like me. and this story is interwoven with all of that. it feels like Home.

because of this fic I gained the motivation to create SO MUCH art, my skills have developed so much and I genuinely love my art now when I didn’t really before. I’ve found my style bc of you :) I’ve also gained an actual following now that continues to grow which is a dream come true since I first joined the internet. and I’ve made so many wonderful friends, I’ve got a group that came together bc of this fic and they’re all such wonderful people that I may never have met otherwise.

I’ve still got so many screenshots and ideas to draw for this fic so I’ll be appreciating it for a long time still, but this is a thank you, a gift and an appreciation for all that you’ve done. you consistently uploaded a sizeable chapter EVERY WEEK which is INSANE, your dedication is so inspiring. you created a beautiful world and characterized all these popular characters so well, especially when mischaracterizations have become the fandom canon atp (looks at Swap Sans,,,) you did so much. you created a family we all adored, we laughed and cried and prayed and joked and created this wonderful community within a wonderful community just to appreciate your words. truly effing masterful. I want to talk about Phantom!Papyrus.

Not Dust’s hallucination, no. I’m talking fanon Phantom, Papyrus’ actual ghost, and what a genuinely cool character concept that is.

Imagine that you are Papyrus. You’re outgoing and outwardly confident. You’re a pacifist. You’re lonely, with only two real, close friends - your mentor Undyne, and your brother Sans. You would trust either of them with your life.

And then Sans kills you.

The circumstances of this vary depending on level of canonicity and personal headcanons. I generally imagine that Sans waits until he has a pretty high LV before attacking Papyrus, so the fight is over relatively quickly (not because Papyrus is weak, but because at this point Sans does so much damage per attack that it doesn’t take too many hits to win, and I don’t think Papyrus would fight back - not violently enough to survive, anyway.)

Papyrus dies… and comes back.

How does this happen? Again, up to personal headcanon. For this post, I’ll say he becomes a ghost due to the violent circumstances of his death, and follows Sans because his dust is on the scarf Sans carries.

At first, Papyrus would be horrified. He’d be furious with his brother, and heartbroken too - this person he loved and trusted just murdered him! Maybe there would even be a moment of him wanting revenge, wanting Sans to pay for what he did.

But regardless of his actions, Sans is still Papyrus’ brother, which means Dust is too. And this is where things get interesting.

As Papyrus watches, Dust makes his way through the Underground, killing indiscriminately. If this is really Papyrus’ ghost, he’d be horrified by what’s happening. He’d beg Dust to stop, try everything he could to end the violence.

It wouldn’t work. How could it? Dust has already gone too far. He killed his brother for this, he’s not stopping now. But after leaving Snowdin, he enters the domain of the Underground’s most dangerous fighters. Papyrus is left to watch in terror as his brother faces Undyne, captain of the royal guard and Papyrus’ best friend.

He has a decision to make. As a ghost, he can’t attack. He can’t get in between them, and he can’t make himself visible to Undyne. The most he can do is talk to Dust, argue and beg for him to stop fighting. So that is what he does - Papyrus takes every chance he can to fly in Dust’s line of sight, yell at him, distract him. And it works.

As the fight goes on, Dust becomes more and more distracted by his brother’s ghost. His magic attacks miss. He doesn’t dodge in time. For a moment, Papyrus is relieved - until he realizes that Undyne isn’t letting up. The moment Dust goes on the defensive, Undyne presses forward, unleashing attack after attack until Papyrus realizes she isn’t just going to capture his brother.

She intends to kill him.

Undyne steps forward. Dust falls back. Undyne readies her spear. Papyrus looks at his brother and beneath the hood he sees an icy terror wash over his face, a sense of defeat, desperation, and despair.

(What is worth more? His brother’s life? Or his ideals?)

Papyrus flies over. Years of training flash through his mind as he whispers into his brother’s hood. “As she raises her spear, send one bone attack into her side, and a second from above. She won’t be able to block both attacks.”

Dust attacks. Undyne staggers. Papyrus watches his brother kill his best friend.

At this point they’re both guilty. Papyrus refuses to aid Dust in attacking innocents, but if he ever seems about to lose a combat, Papyrus is there to point out weaknesses, tricks and attacks that Dust could never have seen on his own. At the end, when the human is gone, Papyrus is left to haunt his brother, watching the world around him slowly decay as he too deteriorates. What could he have find differently? How could he have stopped this?

There is no answer that could satisfy that phantom. He is bound to what remains of his brother, but he has never been more alone.

Fanon!Horror- The Bear

- Worked for a multiversal agency that provided highly trained soldiers to act as mercenaries to whoever could pay, regardless of what they did. Horror was one of these soldiers, as he was indebted to the agency for rescuing he and his brother from his collapsing AU. This agency (too lazy to name it) was very shitty to those who worked for it, paying almost nothing and often making them fight for food to encourage violence and distrust. They wouldn’t want an uprising, after all…

- As these mercenaries were being hired by Nightmare’s enemies and proving to be quite annoying, he showed up and destroyed everything, killing, capturing, scattering, or recruiting all the soldiers. He offered Horror the opportunity to work for him as a guard and soldier, in exchange being treated as a noble with all the food he could want.

- Horror is large, gruff, and always hungry. Despite his rough nature, he tends to be the kindest of the gang and becomes very protective of the others as he gets to know them.

- The reason his AU collapsed was because the code itself was starving, drained of enough magic that it started digesting its own code, collapsing in on itself. Fun. Otherwise, it began as a normal Horror!tale AU.

- His brother worked at the kitchens of the agency and went missing during Nightmare’s attack. His whereabouts are unknown.

Dust

Murder!Sans- The Crow

- A Mad scientist both in the terms that he is crazy and he is angry. Made a deal with the god of Death (Reaper) to permanently kill the human from his timeline despite their Determination, having Reaper personally come and drag them into hell. In exchange, Dust worked as Reaper’s minion/preist, carrying out his bidding to help maintain the order of life and death.

- Fascinated with the prospect of reanimation and dreams of bringing his Papyrus back to life. Reaper doesn’t like this, but finds Dust’s experiments interesting and therefore allows him to continue.

- ✨Potions✨

- Has a pet crow named Terrance that he uses to communicate with Reaper. We love Terrance.

- Reaper has been anxious about Nightmare’s activities and sends Dust to act as a spy, joining the gang and reporting back to Reaper.

Cross

Xtale!Sans- The Wolf

- From an ice-covered Xtale AU, the young Paladin is used as bait to capture and kill the demon X!Chara, failing as the spirit fully takes control of Cross’ body and escapes before the two can be sacrificed. Almost completely overtaken by the monster, Cross makes a desperate plea to the moon god to come save him, summoning Nightmare. NM restores Cross’ control, but refuses to remove X!Chara altogether, using that as leverage to make Cross work for him; he can’t spend too much time away from Nightmare without the demon overtaking his body.

- Originally a Paladin to the sun god (Dream, although neither know it) and is therefore resistant to Nightmare’s magic (hence why he can’t make magical deals and contracts like the others and has to be controlled in different ways).

- His sword, dubbed Fred, is imbued with magic and glows in the dark. It also boomeranged back to him when thrown, but he, uh…needs some more practice with that part.

- Red pupil gets larger the more control X!Chara takes, filling both eyes when in complete control.

Killer

Something New- The Cat

- After everyone in his AU was dead, Killer got bored. Very, very, very bored. Why not poke around the old lab he used to work at, then? He might find something neat. And he does- with the magic he’s accumulated, he’s able to fuel a portal machine that can transport him to other AUs. He quickly redevelops his interest in engineering, stealing parts from other AUs to build his machines…until he’s caught. And thrown in jail. And freed by Nightmare, in exchange for working for him.

- He is a cat. Will climb. Knock thing over. Sit wherever he wants.

- He isn’t a murderer in this AU, instead fusing with the human in a last-ditch effort to stop them from wiping out the entire underground. He was forced to stay behind as everyone else evacuated, though, as it was unknown if the procedure would work or if Killer would be safe to be around. Which, to be fair, he isn’t.

- All of his socks have cat paws on the bottom

Hatchet

Horror!Sans- The Fox

- Due to the loss of his eye and most (if not all) of his magic, Hatchet finds his strength in wielding weapons and building traps. He is fast, agile, and stealthy, though his time of starving had left him physically weak.

- Some of the monsters in the Underground went haywire and attempted to sacrifice Hatchet in some effort to gain more food, only to be stopped by, you guessed it, Nightmare. Hatchet agrees to come work for Nightmare as long as he kills Undyne and restores someone halfway decent to the throne, which he does. Other than that, the inhabitants of his AU can fend for themselves. Except for Papyrus. He’s coming with him.

- How does one person have so many weapons on their body. Where is he keeping them. Where did he get a six foot tall hammer. Why does he have fifteen knives-

- His brother works at the castle too! He picks out Hatchet’s shirts

Dust Sans Headcanons

Both x Reader and just general headcanons. ( Dust Sans belongs to Ask-Dusttale! )

To me, Dust is a very… quiet, aloof character– but he’s also incredibly intelligent and observant

Fanonically, in my mind, he does feel emotions, he just feels them through a kind of static. One thing he is incapable of feeling, though, is guilt.

I also headcanon that he has “hypervigilance”– a constant state of awareness, where he’s constantly assessing potential threats around him.

This also mean he does not sleep. He can’t remember the last time he slept, and in my mind, this also means that Visage ( His Papyrus ) is both a hallucination from going insane… and sleep deprivation. (Though, I do like to think as Visage being a literal ghost, instead of a hallucination as he is canonically– I think )

I also headcanon that Dust’s hood over his head acts as a sort of security blanket? It provides him a sense of calmness, at least.

Signs that he likes you

Because Dust doesn’t talk a massive amount, he’ll often just turn up and… sit beside you. Or he’ll randomly come up to you, grab you by the hand, and take you on a walk ( or just bring you somewhere )

It’s not obvious he’s starting to fall for you if you don’t pay attention to the subtle things.

How he slightly turns to you when you enter the room. How he slightly shuffles over on the couch in order to make room for you, even if he’s mid-conversation with someone else and doesn’t even spare a glance at you.

Unless Killer or Axe is there to point it out, you likely won’t notice– unless he’s been an absolute asshole to you in the past.

I like the thought of Dust beginning to pun more around you (because he does enjoy them!) just to see you either groan, smile, or giggle.

He may initiate small amounts of physical contact. Brushing your hand with his when he wants your attention, or is just walking next to you. Sometimes when you’re both sitting down, he’ll rest his knee on yours.

I… honestly can’t see Dust being a massive fan of PDA? Like he doesn’t… exactly… care that much, but he prefers it in small amounts?

I feel like he’s the type to take comfort in the slightest of touches, and I feel like hugging you and being that close to your SOUL can overwhelm him sometimes.

( This stems from my headcanon that will be put at the end of this )

But when he gets more used to you having such a powerful SOUL (in comparison to his own SOUL), he’ll be much happier with long times of physical contact.

When he finally fully trusts you and knows you won’t run away, he’ll start putting his hood down when he’s around you. At this point, he is fully smitten with you, and couldn’t possibly put the amount of adoration he has for you into words.

It just means he feels safe around you

Also, once he loves you, you’ll be able to catch him off-guard. Like you toss a thing at him, and instead of dodging, it sorta just slaps him in the face and leaves him very confused because he dIdN’T DODGE??

I feel like Dust is also prone to… bouts of violence. And lets be real here, it’s not going to be a “everyone but you” thing, because you can most definitely get caught up in it by accident

That being said, he’d never intentionally hurt you, and if he did hurt you, it’d probably be the first time you ever saw him tear up. ( Not that he’d let you see for long– tugging his hood back over his head and furiously wiping his sockets. )

Just because he can’t feel guilt, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t know when he’s in the wrong, and it also doesn’t mean he can’t feel sad because of what he did.

He truly does love you, even if it’s hard for people to pick up on sometimes, and they tell you that it’s a very “toxic, one-sided relationship.”

Because it isn’t. He has a fuck ton of trauma, the inability to sleep, LOVE 20, and a weird… under-the-surface fear of humans. But he loves you, despite it all, and you love him, too.

The Headcanon

Those with LV are very sensitive to intent. Not physically, of course, because they get more DEF and ATK when their LV climbs higher, but rather... emotionally?

They can tell what you're feeling more acutely, and so it can become overwhelming for them.

do you ever think about Killer not just being like semi-immortal but completely immortal. Like how in a True Pacifist "The Soul" will not break no matter how much their hp hits zero they simply refuse death. Do you ever think that Killer could achieve the same thing. Killer does have 1hp still so I always imagine him with high def to make up for it but on the other hand every attack that lands does kill him but he's only dead for less then a second before continuing on none the wiser.

Also what do you think of Reaper x Killer an angel for an angel. Or something like Past Salphys for Killer cause to be honest I've been converted to a Salphys lover im afraid that and Codependent Kist.

No one ever talks about how canonically Dusttale is ruled by the player and Frisk is just an empty vessel what would Killer think of this if he found out and the additional fact that Dust would in canon work with the player of his universe if there was a bigger threat I always got the feeling Killer was uncomfortable with Dust because of Killer firm belief that Sans would never hurt Papyrus and then there's Dust would he choose to simply not think of Dust as Sans or would he have to endlessly question himself on whether or not Sans always wanted to kill Papyrus and Dust is just proof. Sorry for the long ramble but I just love Killer Sans and more people don't do much with his canon self.

I guess Reaper x Killer would be interesting, especially because how Killer clearly doesn’t fear death at all and yet he keeps evading death and coming back to life lmao. The elusive little bastard keeps slipping from Reaper’s hands and it’s not even because he wants to live or is scared to die.

I’m not really sure about past Salphys. She was one of the only ones besides Papyrus who managed to get through to Sans on the first run; if only for a brief moment. Could be interesting, especially since Killer doesn’t really seem to think much about her besides the resigned idea that she and everyone else is “inside his head,” (hallucinations) and can kill her and alternates of her no problem—although Stage 1 definitely wouldn’t be able to, although I doubt it’d be enough to trigger Killer into Stage 1 the way a Papyrus can.

And yeah I always thought Killer was unnerved and confused by how Dust can do all that and still see himself as Sans. Killer isn’t Sans, just someone with his face, is how Stage 2/Killer sees himself.

This belief, likely imposed and encouraged on him by Chara and possibly other in the Underground, makes it easier to cope with what he did and still does—to people he used to know and love. Easier to do your job when you aren’t the one they’re begging and pleading to—they just can’t see past the face, and their pointless emotions.

Another reason why i don’t think he’d be comfortable around a Dust that wears Papyrus’ scarf—the same way Chara used to do.

I doubt he’d make it obvious or even fully completely understand why it makes him uncomfortable—he’d probably find a way to rationalize and intellectualize away any emotions brought up by it. Probably say it’s weak to hold on to such useless emotions and keepsakes, which likely wouldn’t go over well with Dust.

Perhaps this is how, if you go with the idea that Dust/Murder insists on keeping his name as Sans, he gets the name Dust/Murder. Because Killer renames him, similar to the way he himself was renamed likely wayback in his AU. Cult like vibes of members encouraging the act of leaving behind your old life, identity and goals in favor of a new one that aligns with the cult and its agenda.
